Test Results
Getting your test results
Usually, as part of your consultation, our clinicians will advise you of possible next steps if they decide to take tests. If your test results show that you need more tests or further treatment, we will contact you.
We’d like to encourage all patients to use the NHS App to view their results. If you are unsure how to do this, watch this short video about how to view your medical records in the NHS App.
How long will my results take?
Most routine blood test results are back with us within 5 working days.
Please note that some special or more complex tests can take a little longer. We will let you know if this is the case.
The easiest way to see your results
Once a doctor has reviewed your test results, you can view them:
- in your NHS login account (through the NHS website or NHS App).
- If you do not have the NHS App, you can still telephone or visit us between 10am to 4pm and we will advise what the next steps are
- complete a test result request form
Understanding your results and what to do next
A doctor or nurse at our surgery will have reviewed your results and left a clear comment for you. It’s very important to read this comment and follow the instructions.
Here are some of the common actions you might see:
| If the comment says… | This means you should… |
| Normal – No action needed | Your result is within the normal range. You do not need to do anything, but if you still experience symptoms, get back in touch with the surgery . |
| Book a routine appointment | The result is not urgent, but a doctor or nurse needs to discuss it with you. Please call reception to book a routine appointment in the surgery. |
| Book a telephone appointment | A clinician would like to speak with you over the phone. Please call reception to arrange a telephone consultation. |
| Discuss with Medical Secretary | Your result may relate to a hospital referral. Please call and ask to speak to our Medical Secretary to discuss the next steps. |
| Repeat test required | You will need to have the blood test done again. The comment will explain why and when. Please book another blood test appointment with our Nurse or Health Care Assistant. |
| Follow self-care advice | Your results suggest lifestyle changes may be beneficial, such as changes to your diet, alcohol intake or exercise. Links to helpful information may be included or check NHS Live Well for advice. |
Important: Please always follow the specific advice left with your result.
If you’d like to know more about the test
Patients often wish to find out more about the tests taken and what to expect from their results. We recommend viewing lab tests online website for more information about the test, what to expect, why we test and what to do when the results come back.
